A harmonious Camel Experience.

Riding, walking, and connecting with camels and their cameleers.

Ethical Camel Riding -

Camel Treks Australia is one of the very few camel trekking companies in the world — and the only one in Australia — to offer riding without the use of nose pegs, nose ropes, or chain halters. Our camels are handled through familiarity, consistency, and long-term trust.

Our camels are part of our extended family. We know them individually — their personalities, strengths, and limits — and their comfort and wellbeing guide every decision we make.

Riding at a Glance:

  • One of the only ethical camel riding experiences in Australia

  • No nose pegs, nose ropes, or chain halters

  • Maximum of four riders per journey

  • Multi-day journeys across remote, mixed terrain

  • Guests may walk or ride, depending on preference and conditions

  • Some sections require walking when terrain dictates

  • Strict rider weight limit: 90 kg (no exceptions)

  • Riding is offered as a limited, premium experience

Visit The Flinders Walk page for general Bushwalking information - Both Riding and The 'Cameleer Experience' is optional.

Ethical Camel Riding in the Flinders Ranges

Camel Treks Australia offers one of the only opportunities in Australia to experience ethical camel riding on multi-day journeys through remote desert and mountain landscapes. Our approach is grounded in long-term relationships with our camels and a deep respect for their wellbeing.

We do not use nose pegs, nose ropes, or chain halters. Our camels are handled through familiarity, consistency, and trust. They are part of our extended family — known individually for their personalities, strengths, and limits — and their comfort guides every decision we make.

Riding with us is intentionally limited. From 2026 onwards, we accept a maximum of four riders per journey, ensuring careful camel rotation, additional staffing, and a calm, attentive experience for both camels and guests. Journeys travel across mixed terrain and are not short rides; guests may choose to walk or ride, with some sections requiring walking when conditions or terrain dictate.

A strict rider weight limit of 90 kg applies, without exception. This reflects the reality of sustained riding over multiple days and our commitment to maintaining long-term soundness and comfort for the camels.

Ethical camel riding is offered as a premium, limited experience, priced to reflect the additional staff, higher insurance requirements, and responsibility involved in offering riding in remote Australia. We operate at small scale, by choice, and place animal welfare ahead of volume.

For those who meet the criteria, riding with us offers a rare opportunity to travel slowly through ancient landscapes, guided by camels whose wellbeing always comes first.

Our approach to riding:

  • Riding is limited to a maximum of four riders per camel walk from 2026 onwards

  • This allows us to manage our riding camels carefully across the season

  • Journeys are not short rides and travel takes place across mixed terrain

  • Riders may walk or ride, depending on preference and daily conditions

  • At times, riders will be required to dismount and walk alongside the camels when terrain dictates

Rider considerations:

  • Riders may choose to walk or ride throughout the journey

  • Riders must be able to walk sections when required

  • A strict rider weight limit of 90 kg applies, without exception

These considerations ensure the comfort and wellbeing of the camels and support a safe, balanced journey for all participants.

Pricing and responsibility:

Riding places are priced to reflect:

  • our commitment to ethical camel riding in Australia

  • operating at small scale with animal welfare as the priority

  • the significant compulsory insurances required to legally offer camel riding journeys

For those who meet the criteria, riding with us offers a rare opportunity to travel slowly, connect deeply with the landscape, and experience the quiet companionship of camels whose wellbeing always comes first.

The Director, and the team at Camel Treks Australia and Nomadic Spirit Journeys acknowledge and thank the Adnyamathanha People, the Traditional Owners of the Flinders Ranges region. The name Adnyamathanha means “Rock People,” reflecting the region’s ancient and striking geological formations. We pay our respects to Adnyamathanha Elders past, present, and emerging, and recognise their enduring spiritual connection to Country. Many Adnyamathanha families continue to live in the region, including at Nepabunna and Leigh Creek — our home base and trekking home for the foreseeable future.
